Little Joe and the Big City by Mike Darcy has received the Wordscape Wonders Award from OneTribune Media and the BREW Seal of Excellence from The Chrysalis BREW Project. The book has also been shortlisted for both the monthly and annual BREW Readers’ Choice Award.
The Wordscape Wonders Award recognizes books that examine emotional, social, and existential themes through accessible storytelling. According to the review by OneTribune Media, the award “honours books that explore the landscapes of the human spirit, blending diverse voices with themes of love, resilience, growth, and discovery.” The award is given to works that “invite us to journey through unfamiliar perspectives, offering a deeper appreciation for the rich kaleidoscope of life.”
The BREW Seal of Excellence, awarded by The Chrysalis BREW Project, signifies that Little Joe and the Big City meets their criteria for quality, relevance, educational value, and audience engagement. The book was described in the BREW review as “a gently stirring tale of courage, connection, and kindness—told through the curious nose and brave heart of one unforgettable puppy.” The review highlights its approach to emotional storytelling, stating, “This is the kind of story that curls up beside you like a warm pet after a long day. It doesn’t demand attention—it earns it, with honesty, charm, and the soft, persistent thump of a tail against your heart.”
The book features a young farm dog named Little Joe who becomes separated from his family in a city setting. During his time away, he meets a shelter cat named Mura and begins to learn about displacement, second chances, and empathy. The book is written for children aged 4–8 and uses straightforward language, emotional pacing, and narrative structure suitable for read-aloud settings. The illustrations, created by Tincho Schmidt, provide visual support to the story’s tone and enhance comprehension for emerging readers.
The Chrysalis BREW Project has also shortlisted the book for its monthly and annual BREW Readers’ Choice Awards, which recognize books that receive high engagement and positive responses from a wide audience. The publication’s review notes that “the writing is warm and accessible, perfect for read-aloud time,” and adds that “Little Joe listens, learns, and responds thoughtfully to others, and the adults model kindness, patience, and understanding.”
The book is part of a developing series and has been identified as a useful resource for families, educators, and caregivers aiming to explore emotional growth, animal care, and community responsibility with young readers.
